Bringing a cat home: the new-arrival checklist

July 10, 2026 4 min readBy the Pink Paws team

Litter box math, the two-room rule, and why you'll want more than one scratching post. Everything to have ready before a cat walks through your door.

One litter box per cat plus one. Yes, really. Place them in quiet, low-traffic spots and scoop daily.

Set up a 'base camp' — one quiet room with food, water, litter, a bed and a hiding spot. Let your new cat expand their territory over a week or two.

Scratching posts (vertical and horizontal), a few wand toys, and a window perch will make you a hero. Our Cat Hosts do this all day and are happy to talk you through what the residents actually use — just ask on your next visit.
